For the past four years, Poetic Pathos Youth Slam has competed in the Youth Slam event of the Southeastern Regional North Carolina Poetry Festival. The first ever Youth Slam was won by Poetic Pathos veteran Ishmael Meachum. Three years later, Ish’s younger brother and Captain of the BNV Team, Isa Meachum, won the event, placing first out of ten amazing poets. Second and third place positions were won by Maddie Poole and Shaina Scolnick, respectively.
Poetic Pathos Youth Slam would like to officially thank our newest sponsor: Highway 55 of Fuquay Varina! Thank you for your support! Be sure to visit the location for delicious burgers, fries, shakes, and more!
Poetic Pathos Youth Slam is still a very young organization ran by two full-time teachers. It provides services to youth who don’t have the immediate funds to be able to go on a trip like Brave New Voices, so we are working hard to raise funds for our trip. In the next few weeks, we will be setting up car washes and seeking sponsors for our team. If you would like to donate, please click our Donate link in the Menu. We have set up a GoFundMe account. Please consider donating or helping in anyway. We want to give these amazing youth poets a chance to make a difference in society through their voice. We want to continue bringing this positive change to our community.
April 14th marked the first time Poetic Pathos Youth Slam’s BNV competition took place outside of Gray’s Creek High School. Ten poets gave it their all after three rounds of poetry at The Sweet Palette in Downtown Fayetteville. The competition was certainly fierce, as Shaina Scolnick was crowned the Poetic Pathos 2018 Grand Slam Champion. It will be her, 2nd place finisher Madeleine Poole, and 3rd place finisher Julia Nizen joining veterans Reagan Ford, Nikita Bishop, and Isa Meachum, top three at last year’s Grand Slam and members of the 2017 BNV Team, at the 21st Annual Brave New Voices in Houston.
